Bringing a backpack while skiing is extremely practical: you can store water, sunscreen, a warm garment, and various essential or optional accessories to make your skiing experience even more enjoyable.
But how do you choose the right ski backpack? It partly depends on how you plan to use it: on-piste or off-piste? Here are some key points to consider to make the right choice of equipment.
Between a summer hiking backpack and a winter ski model, the requirements are not the same. Here are the important criteria to know in order to find the ideal backpack for the slopes among all available products.
First of all, it’s better to choose a backpack that is easy to carry: small (especially since you have to hold it in front of you while on a chairlift...) and lightweight. On the other hand, skiing with a bulky backpack on your back can hinder your movements, tire you out faster, and reduce your control over speed.
The backpack shouldn’t be too small either (20 to 30 liters). It should hold essential items for a full day: water (bottle or hydration bladder), sunscreen, UV lip balm, an extra warm garment, and food (a snack or a more complete meal, such as a sandwich), and possibly a first aid kit.
It can also carry your wallet and phone (and a portable battery if needed).
However, some skiers and snowboarders prefer very small backpacks (around 11 liters) to perform freestyle tricks more easily at top snowparks like those in Tignes or Avoriaz.
Also consider backpacks with a flexible straw system connected to a hydration bladder (CamelBak type), so you can drink without stopping and avoid dehydration.
Before buying, try the backpack with the jacket or ski suit you will wear: this will let you know if it feels comfortable with your clothing. There are also male and female models, or backpacks designed to relieve certain pains, such as those with a reinforced back panel to ensure the weight does not strain your shoulders.
Don’t be swayed by fashion either: some backpacks may look attractive but are not designed for skiing. Comfort is one of the key criteria for finding the ideal backpack.
Unlike standard backpacks, many are not sufficiently waterproof. In case of sweat, precipitation, or falling in the snow, a proper ski backpack and its contents will remain dry. Note that some ski backpacks also feature a special anti-sweat back panel.
Make sure the backpack has strong seams and straps, as well as multiple useful pockets, such as side pockets for snacks or sunscreen. Some models also include carabiners (for gloves), a helmet holder, or a waist pocket.
Certain backpacks even have a ski or snowboard carrying system, either horizontal or vertical.
For mid-range equipment, the price can range from around €30 to €100. It depends on volume, number of pockets, integrated technologies, material types, brand choice, etc.
Don’t skimp on quality, especially since a ski backpack is versatile and can also be used for hiking, cycling, snowshoeing, and other mountain activities.
