Summer tobogganing or rail tobogganing: a family-friendly mountain activity

Are you looking for out-of-the-ordinary activity ideas for your mountain holidays? Would you like to mix things up and not just go downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing?

Then discover summer tobogganing, an activity you can enjoy all year round and that delights both children and adults alike!

What is rail tobogganing?

Rail tobogganing is a fun sliding activity that combines the thrills of traditional sledding with the smooth, secure feel of a theme park ride.

Seated in a small sled attached to rails, you race down a long slope, either solo or with a partner. The track features banked turns, fast curves, tunnels, small bumps, and sometimes twists, offering great sensations in complete safety.
Thanks to the manual braking system, everyone can control their speed as they wish: you can take it easy and enjoy the scenery, or seek out more adrenaline.

Accessible in all seasons, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy a fun family moment and rediscover the joys of sliding without relying on snow.

Depending on the resort, the length of the run varies, but tracks are generally between 800 m and 2 km long, with more or less significant elevation drops.

Great reasons to try summer tobogganing during your holidays

Not sure whether summer tobogganing is right for you? Find out why this leisure activity is a must for a family mountain vacation!

A different way to enjoy mountain landscapes

The location of rail toboggan runs usually allows you to explore areas inaccessible by skis or snowshoes, whether in the middle of snowy forests or on open plateaus.

Their elevated structure often makes it possible to enjoy exceptional panoramic views that you might not see elsewhere in the resort.

Rail tobogganing for year-round fun

Designed to operate all year round, rail tobogganing is an ideal activity in winter when conditions are not optimal for skiing or snowboarding. No snow needed to enjoy the thrills of sliding!

In summer too, this activity is perfect for getting your adrenaline fix and is one of the must-do family activities.

Some resorts also offer evening openings for night-time runs, providing a unique experience with illuminated villages as the backdrop.

An activity accessible to children from age 5

Operators impose a minimum age or height requirement for safety reasons. Most of the time, summer tobogganing is accessible from age 5 and/or from 1.10 m or 1.20 m tall (sometimes less). In this case, the child must be accompanied by an adult—perfect for a great family experience!

Solo summer toboggan runs are generally allowed from age 10 and/or from 1.30 m or 1.40 m tall.

And of course, it’s also an activity adults can enjoy, with or without children!

A budget-friendly leisure activity

One of the advantages of summer tobogganing is its affordability compared to other activities: a run, solo or duo, usually costs between €7 and €10. Discounted rates are often available if you purchase a multi-run pass or during special promotions.

In some resorts, holiday passes are also available, allowing you to save money on sports activities, services, leisure options, and more. Check whether your destination offers this type of pass and if rail tobogganing is included.

Which resort should you choose for rail tobogganing?

To cope with the lack of snow in winter and to diversify summer leisure activities, resorts are increasingly developing multi-season toboggan runs. They can be found across all French mountain ranges: mainly in the Alps, but also in the Pyrenees, Jura, Vosges, and the Massif Central.
