Mont Blanc: a legendary Alpine mountain for winter sports

The mere mention of this name evokes memories of legendary ascents by famous mountaineers, such as Jacques Balmat, who on August 8, 1786, reached the summit of the 4,810-meter dome.
While it is a paradise for mountaineers, Mont Blanc is also perfect for skiers and snowboarders, who can enjoy the surrounding resorts to pursue their favorite sport.
The Mont Blanc massif is located in Haute-Savoie and consists of 9 resorts, with other beautiful resorts accessible by car or bus.

The Mont Blanc ski area

The Mont Blanc ski area opens from November to May, although these dates may vary depending on snow conditions. Here are the main resorts and ski areas that make up this majestic Alpine region and the essential information to know.

Chamonix

The most famous resort in Haute-Savoie is a top destination for skiing near Mont Blanc. It enjoys an international reputation, attracting American, British, German, Swiss, and Italian tourists every year. Chamonix maintains its luxury and comfort reputation, as well as being a high-level ski resort, including runs for children and beginners. The area includes:

  • Le Savoy and Les Chosalets: two safe and reassuring runs for both kids and adults.
  • Les Planards: for families and beginners – blue and red runs.
  • La Vormaine: for freestyle skiing with minimal risk.
  • Les Houches: for experienced skiers.
  • Le Brevent and Flégère: for advanced skiers.
  • La Vallée Blanche: for off-piste enthusiasts.

From Chamonix, you can also visit the famous Aiguille du Midi, a must-see during your holiday to marvel at Mont Blanc and the breathtaking panorama.

Argentière

Located north of Chamonix, Argentière is a mountain village in the pure Savoyard tradition. The resort sits at 1,200 meters altitude and is part of the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc municipality.

Argentière is perfect for a ski weekend or family holidays, as the Grands Montets area offers runs for all levels: green and blue runs for beginners, as well as red and black runs for advanced skiers or snowboarders.

Geographically, Argentière offers direct access to Switzerland via the Col des Montets. The village is dominated by the Argentière Glacier, where the visitor center of the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve is located.

Save time by reserving your ski equipment in Argentière here: Stamos Sports Argentière, and remember to book your ski pass in advance to avoid waiting at the lifts!

Les Houches

If you want to wake up to a stunning view of the Chamonix peaks, then Les Houches is ideal. The ski area extends over 55 km of alpine slopes, served by 16 lifts, ranging from 950 to 1,900 meters altitude.

We recommend trying the Piste Verte des Houches, which, despite its name, is actually a black run that regularly hosted the Ski World Cup.
The Les Houches pass also gives access to 2 snowparks and beginner areas: the Tourchet slopes, located in the center of the resort, are perfect for learning to ski.

For ski and equipment rental, Sport 2000 stores will meet all your needs. You can reserve your ski gear at Les Houches here: Sport 2000 Bellevue Sports located at Place du Téléphérique de Bellevue or Sport 2000 Cuby Sport in the resort.

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains lives up to its name. Located at the foot of Mont Blanc, this ski resort is popular among thermal bath enthusiasts. This mountain town is ideal for those who want to enjoy resort life outside skiing hours: from Le Fayet to Le Bettex, including the authentic Savoyard village of Saint-Nicolas de Véroce or Saint-Gervais itself with its historic center featuring typical thermal architecture.

For skiing, Saint-Gervais provides direct access to the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area. You can use the Mont Blanc Tramway (one of the last cogwheel trains in France) to reach the Prarion/Bellevue ski area (1,800 m). In summer, the tramway carries hikers and climbers to the foot of the Bionnassay Glacier at Nid d’Aigle (2,372 meters), serving as a starting point for the Tête Rousse and Goûter refuges for Mont Blanc ascents.

Winter sports shops in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains offer ski and snowboard rentals, as well as mountaineering and hiking equipment. You can select the equipment you need online or directly in-store.

The Vallée Blanche: for advanced skiers

Chamonix and its surroundings attract many visitors not only for the beauty of the landscapes but also for off-piste skiing.
The legendary “Vallée Blanche” offers over 20 kilometers of off-piste terrain in the Mont Blanc massif.

The route starts at the top of the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) and descends to Chamonix, a unique itinerary in the world but very challenging. We recommend hiring a high-mountain guide before attempting this slope. You also need to be in excellent physical condition, as the route starts with skis in hand before a 4-hour glacier descent.
This freeride area is reserved for advanced skiers. The ideal season to ski the Vallée Blanche starts in February.
Explore the Vallée Blanche by reserving your skis at a Sport 2000 ski rental shop in Chamonix.

For example, the renowned resort of Megève, the charming village of Combloux, and the authentic Giettaz in Aravis, which together form the Portes du Mont-Blanc ski area with 100 km of alpine slopes.

You could also admire Mont Blanc and the Aravis range by vacationing in Crest-Voland or Praz de Lys Sommand.
